Abrantes, Sweets and Sports
Abrantes is right in the centre of Portugal, in Ribatejo Norte. In addition to the city's heritage, you can practice numerous sports here. The Rivers Tagus and Zêzere create the ideal natural setting.
Located atop a hill, Abrantes has always been a strategic place due to its geographical position. You can check this out bright and early by visiting the Castle, the Sta. Maria Church and the Keep. In the Castle gardens, you have an extraordinary view over the River Tagus.
Head to the village centre, passing by the S. João Baptista Church. At Praça Barão da Batalha, take the opportunity and indulge your sweet cravings. Go to a pastry shop and taste a palha de Abrantes and a tigelada dessert.
In the afternoon, go to the Castelo de Bode Reservoir. Join a group, take a packed lunch and head to the Aldeia do Mato River Beach. Here, you can go for a swim, rent a canoe and go mountain biking. On the way back to Abrantes, you can have dinner in the village of Rio de Moinhos. If you want, you can also spend a relaxing end of day at the S. Lourenço Park. If you have one more day, very close to your hostel is Aquapolis, a river beach that allows you to play beach volleyball and go canoeing. Equally close is Sports City, a sports complex with fields, courts, pitches, swimming pools and events always being held.
