Alcoutim, rio e aventura
Alcoutim is a village of traditional houses in the Northeast of the Algarve, located on the right bank of the River Guadiana. Surrounded by mountains, the Baixo Alentejo and the border with Spain, it is the ideal place to practice radical sports and relax in natural surroundings.
Alcoutim is the ideal place for good walks and mountain biking. Depart from the Hostel and go up to the Old Castle, also known as the Santa Bárbara Hillfort. It’s an archaeological site from the Islamic period with an excellent panoramic view. Go down to the village, pass by Praça da República and continue to the Village Castle. In addition to the imposing walls, visit the landscaped interior and the Archaeology Centre.
If you want to go closer to the river, go down to the 17th century Walls. Part of your morning can be occupied with a scheduled radical sports. The Cross-border Zipline is very popular, from the nearby village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana, going over the river to the side of Alcoutim. It's a unique experience!
For a much quieter afternoon, we recommend the Pego Fundo River Beach. On warm days, it’s the ideal place to go for a swim. You can also take a boat trip on the river, as there are circuits that reach Vila Real de Santo António.
In the evening, enjoy the regional gastronomy. Black pork and game and very appreciated.
