Aveiro, cultura e inovação
Aveiro is the City of Canals. The city allows us to visit places rich in culture and architecture and leave through the mouth of the Vouga towards the beautiful beaches. Aware of its history and the need for innovation, Aveiro is an important university centre.
Start the day with a walking tour. The Hostel is close to the University of Aveiro, you can go there to feel a little bit of the Campus atmosphere. Cross the City Park towards the Aveiro - Sta. Joana Museum. The baroque art interiors of the former Jesus Convent are very rich; it’s worth a visit! Close by is the Aveiro Cathedral.
Go to Praça da República, where you have the City Hall and other historic buildings. As you walk about, admire the Portuguese pavement and pay attention to the city’s architecture. It’s possible to see its evolution through the tiled facades and compare them with those of Art Nouveau and the most modern ones.
Around the Central Canal, cross to the left bank and watch the colourful moliceiro boats. Here, you can take a boat tour on the Ria and along the Salt pans. In this area, be sure to look for a pastry shop and try the most powerful of Portuguese sweets, the ovos moles de Aveiro. Enter the urban centre until you reach the Fish Market.
For your afternoon, choose between going to the beach or continue with a few more cultural visits. For sun and sea, choose between the Dunas de S. Jacinto Beach, the Barra Beach and the Costa Nova Beach. For a visit, you have the Ílhavo Maritime Museum, with exhibitions connected to the history and production of cod. As an alternative, you can also visit the Vista Alegre Museum, also in Ílhavo, where you can visit the old Porcelain Factory.
