Castelo Branco, jardins e cultura
The city of Castelo Branco is a centre of contemporary art, heritage and unique regional products. You can also go for walks and practice various radical sports in the Tejo Internacional Nature Park or at Pinhal Interior.
Start your day with a walk to the City Hall, next to the Devesa Garden. Here, feel the pulse of the city centre. Go up the hill to the Castle that was once occupied by the Templars. From the top of the S. Gens Viewpoint, you can see the Gardunha and Estrela mountains, as well as the plains that go all the way to the Spanish border.
Go down and visit the Cargaleiro Museum, where the work of an important potter and Portuguese modernist painter, Manuel Cargaleiro, is exhibited. You are now in the heart of the historic centre, as you go down to Praça de Camões, take a look at the Bispo Arch. These streets have a lot of 16th century doors.
Head towards the S. Miguel Church, the Cathedral, and from there continue to the most sought-after place in the city, the Episcopal Garden, a baroque 18th century garden of considerable size and with a diverse set of sculptures, small lakes, fountains and stairs. A small paradise...
Return to the centre and pay a brief visit to the Embroidery Interpretation Centre. This is one of the most recognised handmade products in the area. The following day, visit the Aldeias do Xisto of Sarzedas and Martim Branco. There are river beaches nearby, as well as great hiking and mountain biking routes.
