Faro, praia e cidade
Faro is the largest city in the Algarve. Its beautiful beaches are part of the Ria Formosa Nature Park. The historic centre highlights its millennial history through an admirable heritage.
Catch the boat in the morning at the Porta Nova Pier. It’s 1 km away from the Hostel, but it’s easy to make on foot. Here, you can choose the beach you want to go to. As the beaches are on islands, access is made by ferry. Our suggestion is the Culatra Island and the Farol Island, the easternmost one. But you can also choose the Deserta Island or the Faro Island.
Return mid-afternoon to explore the historic centre. Just off the pier, you have Vila-Adentro with the oldest monumental nucleus of the city. Enter the city walls through the Portas do Mar Arch and go up to the Cathedral. Then, exit through the Vila Arch towards the Manuel Bívar Garden. Turn towards R. de Sto. António and continue to Praça da Liberdade. This is the main pedestrian and commercial area of Faro.
Later in the evening, you can look for a restaurant or bar behind the Customs Building. The area has a lot of clam and razor clam snacks. You also have fish stews, seafood rice or a simple grilled fish. With a cold drink, you won't be too bad.
