Melgaço, montanha e aventura
For those who like adventure sports, Melgaço is a mandatory visit! Here, you breath the green of Minho! In this municipality, you’ll also find a unique heritage of Romanesque art.
The Youth Hostel of Melgaço is in the northernmost municipality of Portugal, next to the bank of the River Minho and in the Peneda-Gerês National Park. A little more than 5 km to the North, is Galicia, Spain.
As the Hostel is part of a sports centre, your mornings can include jogging, football, tennis and mini-golf, going for a swim in the swimming pool or having a massage. You can also do an adventure sports programme: Rafting, Canoeing, Nature Walks, are some among many options.
After lunch, we recommend driving around some nearby locations. Go to Castro Laboreiro and visit the old fort. Then, return by Lamas de Mouro and Paderne. In addition to the beauty of these rustic villages, here you can visit some Romanesque churches.
Returning to Melgaço, climb to the Castle and admire the Keep. What a place to enjoy these landscapes! Back in the village centre, it's time to recover energy with a good meal. You can choose between trout, lamprey, oven roast kid, rojões [fried pork tenderloins] or try the sausages.
