Porto, rio e património
Porto is the second largest city in Portugal. By the River Douro, it’s a destination where you can experience the cultural and commercial life of a modern European city. There are multiple monuments, museums and places to visit. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There are different urban means of transportation from the Youth Hostel to the city centre. Start by visiting the Lello Bookstore, famous for having inspired the library in the Harry Potter films. Right next door, you have the Clérigos Church and Tower. Go up the Tower stairs, where you’ll have a unique view over the city.
Head to Av. dos Aliados, the most central area of the city, and from there go to R. de Sta. Catarina, the main shopping street. Here, you’ll find the Café Majestic, take a look inside.
Continue to the Ribeira area, where you’ll find restaurants and bars right next to the River Douro. You’ll also be able to see the D. Luís Bridge and the city of Gaia. It’s there that, during the afternoon, you can pay a visit to the Port Wine cellars. On your second day, we recommend a visit to the Serralves Foundation, where you’ll find the Museum of Contemporary Art and the beautiful Park gardens.
From here, take a transport to Rotunda da Boavista, where there is a magnificent work of modern architecture, the Casa da Música. Keep an eye on the agenda, they have good events and concerts to your liking. On the way back to the Hostel, take the waterfront road through Alfândega. Enjoy the traditional houses and the banks of the River Douro mouth.
